Richard Hawley at Brixton Academy

October 4, 2012

Great venue to see this Sheffield stand up comedian who plays some music too. No, of course he is the Richard Hawley who used to be in Pulp and is a cool, hard, drug addled nutter who tells the audience to Fuck Off if they are just going to talk amongst themselves.  His song intros were legendary – I especially enjoyed the one where he said it was about flying a kite with his son. Made all the more interesting by being high on acid at the time.

His delivery is sardonic northern wit. His songs are soulful psychedlia-tinged ballads with his rich voice eneveloping every fibre in your body. The sound was really full and fabulous – with the bass vibrating through my chest, but have to admit I prefer his earlier songs that are less ‘boys music’ (as I like to refer to endless guitar riffs) and more ballady pop.

Lovely set with half a dozen trees and atmospheric lighting. Three stars.
